END OF 2016

How time flies, it's already the last few days of 2016, and I'm going to Indonesia for a holiday with my family tomorrow!

In the year 2016, I've really achieved a lot, and it was definitely the year that I've experimented with so many things with polymer clay (now even watercolour yey!)

I have a couple of things in mind that I would like to write it down. They are quite "big" in the sense that it will affect a lot of things I do.

One of the things that I want to improve in 2017 is to SPEND LESS TIME ON POINTLESS ADMIN WORK. Well okay that's a bit harsh. Maybe they're not pointless, but just useless to me.

Anyway, these changes will hopefully help me achieve that, and let me have more time on the crafting itself, and actually earning money to survive.

I wish I have more than a pair of hands sometimes, but I just cannot afford to hire anyone to do the things I'd probably end up checking and correcting myself...so cutting off admin work is probably the best solution for me!

I started the mailing list few months back, thinking that it would be convenient for me and my customers who wants to order custom order to get notified when I reopen my custom order.

But I realised that it was taking up too much time.

Well in the beginning I did spend a lot of time making mailing templates and all which helped, but I was never one with words so I found myself stressing over how the email should look and what other things I should say to make the email I send every month refreshing.... It also takes time to craft the email itself, and eventually I found it becoming a waste of time.

I realised that since now Instagram has the "switch on post notification" option (which I myself use quite a lot), people can just do that and get notified when I reopen custom order there. I've always thought of Instagram as the place I update stuff about handxmade the most, so it makes sense for me to direct people there.

There's also less than 30 people who signed up my mailing list anyway HAHAHA #sadtruth. If there were at least 100 I probably would consider continuing it, but nah.

I thought that having mailing list would also help to make my business look more legit (wth haha), but it really started to not real make sense since it was just me opening custom orders, not having new content to share y'know? I also made this RSS feed thing, where those who sign up will be able to see my blog posts on my website via their email. But......it's not like I blog a lot anyway HAHAHA which goes to my next point.

Now I've been writing on my Dayre for more than a year, almost every day.

Not even exaggerating, I've been really consistent with updating my mundane life, about almost everything. Most of my customers even came from Dayre!

Being an app that is entirely based on mobile, blogging has really become much easier! I always have my phone with me (seriously), while my desktop is always, well, at home and not aways accessible. I mostly blog while I travel from one pace to another! Entertain myself and basically making full use of my time wisely (Y)

I even have some content that was how I would have written it on my blog! But it's more refreshing cause I don't try to act serious (lol) and I can use emojis (which I do all the time) and Dayre's really cute and relatable stickers!

I also started using their hashtag function well, and putting #handxmadeblog when it's regarding handxmade, so that it's easy to look for.

It really saves me a lot of time, since I don't really have to craft the blog post, and words just falls off easier there for me. I can totally see myself blogging about handxmade there more willingly than on a computer 🙃

That's why, I won't even need the mailing list anymore HAHA.

You can also access Dayre content on desktop, so I guess it's not as bad.

Although they compressed the photos quite a bit, I've made a new gallery thing on my website so that new stuff will still be uploaded right here!

I've always thought of my website as a portfolio for my works, a place where I showcase all my work (even the shitty ones) to see how far I've come and how much I improved.

That's why I try to post everything on my blog. ALL THE PHOTOS. But because I attempt to do that, I ended up with photos that has a lot of similar description I have for all my other blog post. WHICH IS SO BORING??? I mean yeah I do feel that way for that particular part of the figurine, but it's really the same.

It feels like I'm trying very hard to write a blog post when I can't even express myself properly, and it's just for the photos.

I've divided them into many different categories, so it's easier to go for the things you'd want to see the most.

When you go in, there'll be tons of slideshows of images, and if you'd like to see more, there's thumbnails of the images so you can click on whatever you'd like to see!

I've made it so that each figurine will have their own photos in the slideshow, and there's even 2015's figurines! :') I really can see how much I've improved, my crafting and even photography skills.

The newer ones will have a 360 interactive photo to go with it! Pretty hyped about that hehe. I'm still not sure if I want to invest some money for a better quality 360 photo hosting site...still thinking about it. But I definitely want to keep taking 360 photos of my figurines! It's just nice to be able to see them from different angles after the figurine is passed to their respective owner! <3

I've even linked the project's respective blog post at the end, and I'll do that for my Dayre posts too for the upcoming new posts!

For those images that doesn't have a blog post, I'll be writing small description and these will only be seen when you hover your mouse on the photo itself. Really think it's a good idea to have bits and pieces of stuff I want to remember about the particular order, and I don't have to do that for each photos yay!

Now, the figurines for 2016 are not all uploaded yet, because I realised it's actually really laggy and it takes ages to load T.T I've tried my best, to find code for lazy loading, infinite scrolling etc etc and thought about all kinds of idea for me to portray the images like this without having much lag.

Like seriously the waiting time is quite horrible. WHO WILL WANT TO VISIT WITH SUCH BAD LOADING TIME??? This is especially true for my custom order figurines gallery, because that has everything from 2015 to 2016! 😱

Each slideshow of a figurine would consist in average 10 photos?? And apparently it's recommended to not have 20 photos in a page HAHAHAHAHAH #shiet.

So really.......I'm at a loss 😞

I probably will have to separate them into different pages or link them through the first page....WHICH SUCKS because it's just better to see everything in a go la (imo)

I figured it will take me a while to get this done, so I decided to just let the news out before I revamp it again. It actually took me more than a month to finish uploaded everything from 2015 to 2016, and the thought of redo-ing the whole thing really makes me feel annoyed 😟 At least now I have the respective blog post correctly so I don't have to look for them again aye? LOL #thinkpositive

I have a couple of things in my head. If you look under GALLERY, you'll see a handxmade standard figurine section 😉 This will be revealed, hopefully, pretty soon, and it's basically a custom figurine but with some restrictions (hence also cheaper), and I'll explain the reason why I want to do it when the time comes hehe.

I also want to have something which I can call my own, and slowly ease into that instead of taking custom order all the time.

Having stocks isn't easy when you don't know what you want to make, and that was the problem for me in 2016. I think for most artist, the best situation is where you sell the things you've thought about, and made yourself. Custom orders to me is more of like a quick and guarantee way to earn money, but I think every sales person will tell you that customer service is not easy.

So the last few months or so, I've sat down a couple of times with my partner, and talked about what do I actually want out of my creation.

I've always, ALWAYS, love watercolour, and I also prefer to make things that are useful or at least meaningful (like my custom order figurines.)

I tried making accessory holders with polymer clay, and painted with some watercolour (which I'm still new to), even experimented water colour on polymer clay like the penguins and lovebird (which failed badly HAHA)

So in 2017, I would like to combine all three things together, and come up with something that is made with polymer clay, is useful, and with watercolour 😍

I always get excited just thinking about it, but really hope I can get to do it ASAP! Hehehe. Hopefully this gives some insight of what's gonna happen for handxmade in 2017. Although like most things, decisions made and what actually happens is entirely different in the end, I'm glad that I at least have some sort of direction.

And with the reducing of admin work coming soon......I hope I'll have more time for more experimentation and come up with my own line of creation instead of just having custom orders! 😊

Now I just need to find a feasible solution for my gallery.......... 😶

Hope everyone had a good year, and may 2017 brings you more joy and happiness!

Few days back, I received my craft closet!

Basically, it's a closet, but opens up to a craft storage with a table that can be extended!

I love it sooooo much and it has definitely made my crafting much more efficient. Now everything has its own place, and keeping everything after a crafting session has never been easier!

Here's a before and after shot ;)

I also wrote a much detailed post about the process of moving everything from my messy table and the area around it (heh) to the craft closet on my Dayre! :D

It took me a grand total of 5 hours, which to be honest, was less than I expected HAHAHA. I thought it would take me at least two days!

I had so much fun moving my stuff and figuring out where should a certain item's house be at :>

I also love how the things I always need to reach out to are near me, like my clay storage on my left, paints on top, Pocket Roller from Pocket Kitchen kit on my right etc! Ahhhhh such convenience.

The table too, is more of like extension? I love how I can fit my lightbox inside (and the closet can be closed with the lightbox open like this!) and when I do need space, just push it in and tadah! More space to do things like using the cutting mat :D

This doesn't come cheap, but it's a good investment which I can keep for a very very long time. Hell, a piece of SOFA is even more expensive and you only sit on it! Hahaha. Even after almost a week, I'm still so happy when I look at it (and this doesn't happen to me, EVER

Anyway, this really marks a milestone for me, the FIRST furniture I've ever wanted and got for myself, and the BIGGEST and most EXPENSIVE thing I've spend on smth craft related! :D

Somehow, I've been getting more Spexial orders from customers and it's quite interesting! Hahaha.

His hair was pretty interesting but I think I managed to duplicate it quite well! Some hairs are really difficult to make, especially for guys. But this was pretty okay! :)

His eyebrows is quite thick and straight though, but it's features like this that makes each figurine special. :D

The same customer also ordered another Spexial figurine of someone else for her friend! If you're a Spexial friend...can you guess who this is? XD

Did you get it right? Hehehe.

I took this as a comparison to see how much I've improved. I like to do this from time to time, to ensure myself that I'm heading the right direction. I've really improve a lot since a few months back, and I'm so glad to have all these wonderful people purchasing from me and trust me in what I do! :')  Thank you <3

This week was basically a Chinese New Year week for us Singaporean Chinese! :)

I don't really celebrate because our family wasn't really the type to go full on- just a simple reunion dinner with our family! If you want to know more about what Chinese New Year mean to me, you can head here to read what I wrote regarding that topic.

During Chinese New Year and visiting, the younger ones (AKA those who hasn't got married) will receive an Ang Bao from adults (AKA married), which is Red Packets! These red packets will have money inside, but usually as a form of gesture. Of course people with rich relatives would usually receive more, but it's the gestures that counts in my opinion.

So to mark the occasion, I made some miniature ang baos!

I even made little packets that these Red Packets come in! :D

The design was found on google, so credits to whoever designed it! But I made the flaps and the back and actually piece and glued them together so it really looks like an ang pao packet! :D

I learnt quite a bit from using Photoshop from this project too! I do hope I'll be able to make more packaging and stuff in the near future with this skill.

Now during Chinese New Year, whenever we go visiting, we have to bring two mandarin oranges to the said person's house, and exchanging those two oranges we brought with theirs!

The reason mandarin oranges are such an important part of CNY is because these mandarin oranges in Chinese sounds similar to the word "luck" and orange sounds like the Chinese word for "wealth". Through the play of words, the Chinese is associating the gift of orange and tangerine as having an abundance of happiness and prosperity! (Source: http://traditions.cultural-china.com/en/214T11982T14619.html)

Hence I made a miniature piece of oranges! Love the slightly glazed look on the miniature that real oranges have hehe.

I also glued two ang bao packets at the back! You can see the folds here haha. These ang bao packets definitely give it the decoration piece a CNY feeling and changes the whole theme! It's a wonder how these little things makes everything different.

This were given to my mum as a gift!

I also made a pair of mandarin earrings for my mum, just because! It's also a pair, like how you would bring to one's house during visiting! ;)

During Chinese New Year, there's also a lot of goodies that only pops out during that period! This is a Kueh Lapis (or Kek Lapis) that I learnt how to make in one of AiClay's CNY goodies workshop!

Photo taken from AiClay.com

This workshop!

Yes, I also learnt how to make the oranges here too! But mine has a darker green stem and is glazed :D

I didn't want to post the pineapple tarts because it's made with a mold (for time saving purposes during workshop) hence it's not truly my work. BUT THE TARTS ARE AMAZING TOO RIGHT!!

The Kueh Lapis was made by me and I did a couple so I just put everything on a plate hahaha.

So yep! These were the #craftoftheday posts that I have for those two weeks! The rest were AiClay's Pocket Kitchen tutorial, which can be seen in the review of AiClay's Pocket Kitchen kit

If you haven't read the post, you really won't understand how awesome the kit is. Really.

Go read it.

Anyway, to address the (LAST) in the title of this post.....

Yes, this will be the end to the resolution of posting a completed craft piece every day for #craftoftheday.

I know new year's resolution usually doesn't last very long for a lot of people, but I was determined to keep it as long as possible! However, I'm gonna have to stop this now because I want to make videos, and it will take me quite awhile to dabble on it and explore that area!

I'm glad I at least did it every day for more than a month ahahhaahha.

I've always wanted to try making videos, tutorials, just to keep track of what I've done and keep a record, but I will not be able to do it if I keep trying to create something to post every day. And honestly I don't really get much experience out of it! (My photoshop skills have improved drastically though- even if it's just adjusting the brightness hahaha)

I do hope I'll still be able to update my instagram as many photos as possible, and maybe more work in progress shots! But yes, I do want to focus on making videos as of now!

I will probably lessen the amount of custom orders I take in (even though it's not a lot now anyway...) but I do want to take time off and focus on making videos! I have quite a number of projects in mind, so I wanna make sure I can pull them off first! ^^

This #craftoftheday resolution journey really helped push me to create things and I'm really grateful for that. It was also giving me unnecessary stress but now I have more than 30 craft piece on my Instagram! One of the reason why I wanted to do this was to have more things I crafted as an album so I could see myself improve, and yes, I can definitely see lots of improvement especially right from the beginning! (Editing skills, too hahahaha)

I hope I can finish at least a video by next week...but it might take me more time! Next week is gonna be such a busy week for me haha.

A custom order of my customer's REALLY FLUFFLY cat!

This is quite different from my past cat work, which is this:

It is also more than twice the size, maybe triple the size of my old work! However I think I like the newer work better. The old version feels more cutesy, which is not really my style imo... The new version feels more realistic and I think I like to portray more details than less!

I'm sad that I am not allowed to post the reference photos, because the cat is really fluffy and cute!!

This position is also from the reference photo, even the mouse toy. The colour of the base is similar to the floor of the cat that it was sitting on, too! Love the colour matching to be honest :)

I think I'll be making cats and dog in this style from here onwards. I don't know whether is it just me, but I personally feel that this is much easier to make than the cutesy one. Maybe because it's a tad bit bigger! ^^

I am planning to make some cats from Cat Safari Singapore and donate to them so they can sell, which they will use for the medical treatment for the cats! So there'll be TONS of cats for my #craftoftheday soon hahaha. I probably will recreate the cats with this realistic style so I'm looking forward to that!! :D

This week was pretty hectic for me as I have freelance video operator events to work for. Waking up 5am for three days consecutively and not eating much for the first two days really take a toll on me.

However, since I started my resolution, I wanted to make sure I post something up everyday and I'm glad I was able to do that even when I wasn't crafting!

I know I said that I'll be posting a blog post for #craftoftheday every sunday, but I went out to Cat Safari on that day! You can head to my Dayre Post to read more :D

There were 4 custom orders for #craftoftheday this week, so here's the other craft pieces!

I wanted to make a no face (Kaonashi) for quite some time and I finally did it thanks to my resolution hehe. This was really tiny, and the face details were quite tough to paint! The watercolour effect could be seen much better here!

I started painting quick watercolour background to go with my random craft piece, because I was quite sick of the dull, white background HAHAHA.

It looks very kiddy, no shadows and it's just not very well done, but I think it tells a better story for each craft piece! This still takes time though, but I enjoyed making it hehe.

The next craft piece is these TOTOROS! I've actually crocheted these for my teacher when I was still dabbling in the craft side.

This is the blog post for it: http://doubleoxm.blogspot.sg/2013/10/totoros.html.

This is my old blog though, and I'm keeping it for things like this haha. You can also see the crochet patterns I made under the crochet tab. Hahaha. The photo looks terrible what was I thinking hahahahahaha.

I STILL haven't watch the Totoro movie NOW and I'm making clay versions of it HAHAHA.

These were from a pattern online, and honestly I think I was very ambitious even in the past. I stopped crocheting because I refused to keep using other people's pattern and made some patterns of my own. But it took a lot of time to create the patterns and crochet itself is a very time consuming thing to do!

After I realised that polymer clay exist, I've stopped crocheting/knitting altogether. #guilty. I have so many knitting needles and crochet hooks and they're just sitting there untouched...

I digress!

Now that I think about it, I should have made the grey Totoro at least two times bigger than the current size haha.

The next craft piece is Whisper from the 3DS game, Yokai Watch! This game is one of the best RPG games I've ever played, and I actually finished the main story of the game without realising I'm going so fast!

The side quests are actually really interesting and best thing is they're not overwhelming like some other RPGs. The graphics are terrific, and I love how it's so well planned! There's even toilets and stuff in supermarts XD

If you have a 3DS you really have to check Yokai Watch out!!! IT'S SO UNDERRATED TSK.

For this craft piece, I tried to imitate the shadows since Whisper is white in colour. The mouth, eyes, everything is watercoloured...I think it doesn't look as nice. Maybe I'll only make watercolour series for things that has colours on their body, and make the eyes etc acrylic paint like usual. hmmmmm.

Alright, that's all for #craftoftheday. I need to buck up and make more crafts!! Used up a lot of them during the past few days when I didn't craft and was working and resting.. :| More to come soon! :D

First of all, happy new year everyone! :)

I hope 2015 was as exciting to everyone as it was to me- since I started handxmade and was stressed like hell, mostly issues regarding $$$ OTL

Anyway, recently I've been posting much more on my Dayre, so there will be less personal things on this blog, and there will only be updates about my creations here instead.

Do head to http://dayre.me/doubleoxm to see more WIP, and read about my musings, rants (lol) and daily life as an amateur miniature sculptor. :) There's also a lot of updates of my bird, buibui, over there too XD

For my 2016 resolution, I've made a point to upload a completed craft piece (if possible) each day. #craftoftheday ;) I hope that this will keep helping me improve and keep me inspired. ABSOLUTELY NO SLACKING THIS YEAR!!!

I will update #craftoftheday photos and thoughts about each craft piece here weekly every sunday, excluding custom orders since I'll be posting more in depth photos of it in individual post. So the amount of creations in #craftoftheday posts on handxmade might vary. Hence, I think instagram might be a better place to follow if you want to see each #craftoftheday craft piece in order!

I've already started since two days ago, so if you want quick updates, do head to my instagram

Now to get to the point (finally xm tsk). Here's a custom order!

This order was really fun to make, because of the hair and shirt XD MUSHROOM HEAD!!

The figurine is actually portraying an actress in one of her characters, and she's located in Singapore. Here's the reference photo!

Photo 28-12-15, 4 17 51 PM.jpg

So adorable haha. I couldn't really make her hand go over her head because the hair and head on the figurine is too big LOL. I think it's quite impossible to make hands go over the head in my figurines because it would look not proportionate in my opinion.

I made the body bigger than usual here because in the show, she acted as someone who is chubby so she actually stuffed her clothes with things! It's really my first time doing this haha. I like her boobies and booty here ;)

A close up of the shirt! One of the things I really love to do is to imitate the clothes, and this was a joy to make ^^

This customer ordered three figurines, so I'll be uploading the respective posts when I upload them for #craftoftheday! :)

This is the last Christmas order and honestly I was quite overwhelmed when she told me she wanted SIX figurines.

Truthfully, I was terrified that I might not be able to finish all the orders on time before Christmas and was pretty stressed out haha. Spent countless of hours straight in a few days to finish everything but eventually managed to finish one or two days before the deadline. *phew*

After going through this, ET and I talked about how we can change from ORDERS to SLOTS because an order could have 30 figurines, if you know what I mean. Let's say if there's 15 slots, it would mean I can make 15 figurines for that month, and one person can take 3 slots for 1 order. I think it will be much clearer for me, and help me plan out everything better.

I think I should make an FAQ section on my website soon, with all the information clearly stated there.

Here are the individual shots with the reference photos!

I think this figurine has one of the nicest hair I've ever made so far haha, the two tone hair colour made it look more realistic hehe.

She was very nice and followed instruction nicely. Sent me two photos, one was the outfit, and another the hair, because she knows I will follow the photo directly so she sent me the right parting of the fringe.

First attempt at making bangs, quite fun hehe.

This is my favourite out of the batch! The number was quite hard to paint on though, and the stripes on the sleeves. But I really like the end product.

Baldies!!! Hahahaha I always laugh whenever I see the figurines without hair XD #guiltypleasure

I'm really happy that I got orders from more "strangers" so to speak. She wasn't someone I know personally and she trusted me to do everything. She was very excited and happy when I sent her progress photos and was satisfied with what I've done.

Hopefully handxmade will be more people's go to place for gifts for others! ^^

The next custom order that was ordered from me for a Christmas present is this:

Customer's girlfriend holding her clarinet! She wore the dress and leather jacket on the figurine during one of her performances too! ^^

The WIP photo I uploaded on instagram! I thought I wouldn't be able to make it properly but it turned out better than expected. I think I expected it to have a lot more missing keys hahaha. The clarinet have 24 keys in total, and the clay clarinet was only 2.2cm LOLOL.

I personally play this instrument myself during my secondary school years and throughout polytechnic. I only stopped recently because I couldn't find time and commitment to practice and I know I have no rights to play if I don't practice, so I left the alumni band :(

I still miss it sometimes, but I want to focus on handxmade for a few years at least, and not let myself find excuses because of any distraction/other commitments.

Hopefully....I can play the clarinet sometime in the near future again. :)

I really put in a lot of effort in this haha even got reed :')

You can see how the lines and shape are not very straight though.. One day I wanna make an improved version. Definitely will have to be bigger than 2.2cm.... Hahaha.

Customer wanted a wood floor-like base, so I tried my best to paint it accordingly. Think it went quite well.

I painted the side and bottom black because in my mind it was literally a block taken off the ground and those are kinda like shadows. If you know what I mean haha.

I really feel that making this as a sit-on-shelf figurine is much better than a keychain. And I love how this has a focus (the clarinet) and it kinda captures part of her life in one little figurine. It really warms my heart. This is what I want to do- to sculpt something that is important to someone and keep it there forever.

Here are the reference photos I was given! ^^

Here's a comparison of the figurine with my hand.

I hope I will have more opportunity to make more music instruments in the near future hehe.

Now before you get confused with the title, let me explain what I mean by "first".

Handxmade just started less than a year, and honestly, I haven't really do much. I still learn something new every time I start to clay, and usually it's a crucial thing that I probably should have known right in the beginning...so yes I'm still a beginner imo.

Despite that, friends are ordering from me, and giving me support.

However, recently I got an order from someone who I've never met in my whole life ordering from me.

I actually didn't know that someone submitted the form because somehow google form didn't send me an email notification, but an email asking me to SWITCH ON the notification. Which I think was sent to me BECAUSE there was a submission and they're asking me to switch it on??? I don't know D: I only went to check because my friend ordered from me and she told me she submitted the form, and of course I didn't receive any notification..........

Worse part was, there was a dateline and I wasted one week BECAUSE I DIDN'T KNOW THERE WAS A FORM SUBMISSION T.T

I managed to finish it about a week before the deadline though HAHA. It was a lesson learnt nonetheless. CHECK WHENEVER THERE'S AN EMAIL FROM GOOGLE LOL.

Anyway, after passing her the figurines, there were more people who wanted to order from me, and they were all strangers :') I'm so grateful that she likes it and shared it on social media. Just one post from Instagram/Dayre and I received more followers and orders. Thank you so much Zhiqing!!

Now on to the figurines!

I think I improved a lot compared to the past figurines whenever I look at them. Quite proud and happy about them! Lots to improve on especially the face but I'm pretty satisfied as of now. I think this is the feeling I should get whenever I make something. IMPROVEMENT, CHECKED. SATISFACTORY, CHECKED.

Comparison with my palm!

Another thing that I should improve on is probably my photography skills HAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Sigh.

I am going to show the photos that were send to me as reference. Now, these are personal photos (.... ok not exactly but) so I mosaicked the face for privacy purpose. The following photos without watermarks are not mine.

Psst, she's actually a Mediacorp actress and she has a twin! ;)

I think this last one is my favourite! I think the dress was quite spot on hehehe. (selfpraise sia stahp)

A comparison from the very first figurine I made. They're a tad bit smaller and much more proportionate, which is always a good thing.

Alright, that's it for this order! I'll update the next order when the recipients receives their items :) I try not to post anything up when the dateline isn't up yet..just in case they see it. So there'll definitely be more updates to come!
